I’m a huge Merle Travis fan. His playing, songwriting, and unmistakable thumbpicking style are a big part of why I love vintage country guitars. Merle played a Gibson Super 400, and that connection makes this model especially meaningful to me.

The guitars pictured here have come through the collection. I photograph the labels, tuners, wear, repairs, cases, tags, and other details that help place each one.

Gibson didn’t change every specification on January 1. I compare the whole guitar instead of forcing it into a neat calendar-year rule. If you have a Super 400 you may sell, send the serial number and a few photos. I’d like a chance to buy it.
